The New Mem Fox: Review and Giveaway!

To me, books are a really big deal.

As far as I'm concerned, reading is the perfect past time. There is nothing better than losing yourself in a good book.

In fact, I haven't stopped reading since the moment I started!

I remember always getting books for birthdays and Christmas, and my favourite series growing up was Trixie Beldon.

Remember those? Or am I just too old?

When my husband and I met, he hadn't read a book since high school, and was genuinely surprised when I told him I read in bed every night before going to sleep.

I was genuinely surprised he didn't!

Now he almost reads more than me!

Almost.

We have tried to instil the same enthusiasm for books, into our children.

Every time we get a new children's book, I can't wait to read it to them, and they get excited about it too.

And that was the case when the new Mem Fox book 'Good Night, Sleep Tight' arrived in the mail.

We sat down to read it straight away, and my boys giggled the whole way through it!

In the story, Bonnie and Ben's babysitter, Skinny Doug, when putting them to bed, starts to recite rhymes that his mother said to him. And they are the same rhymes that I grew up with as well!

Rhymes like Pat-A Cake, This Little Pig and It's Raining, It's Pouring to name a few!

It brought back memories of my mother rhyming with me, as she played with my fingers and toes.

Aaah, how time flies!

This book is very easy to read, and it flows really well. The illustrations by Judy Horacek are really light hearted and fun! My eldest son, who is learning to read, has been sitting reading it by himself and enjoying looking at the pictures.

We all loved reading it!

Good Night, Sleep Tight is a definite winner in our house!

  1. We have always adored Possum Magic in this household. That most special of books, tied in with our own breakfast favourite vegemite, always gets my toddler trying out her words and sharing the story. Mem always creates magical moments with her books in this house. I didn't know there was a new book, can't wait to read it.

  2. We love "10 Little Fingers, 10 Little Toes". I remember when I was about 6 months pregnant and read it in a bookstore. I cried a fountain, it was so adorable and cute.
And oh yes, I remember Trixie Beldon books! She was so feisty, eh? :) x

  3. I love books! And Toddler C does too.
If he comes up to me with a book, I will drop whatever it is that I am doing and I will read to him...we both love the words and the cuddles!

I hadn't heard of Mem Fox until someone gave me The Green Sheep at my baby shower.
I was immediately smitten and so started reading it to Toddler C almost daily.
I love that it has been such a constant in his life that he now knows almost all the words...he loves pointing at the different sheep and I love seeing that chubby little finger work its way through the pages!

  4. We are big fans of Hello Baby. The first and last pages of the book have a mother's hand and a baby's hand on them - and they almost meet. My children adore putting their hands on the baby's hand and getting me to put my hand on the mother's hand... and the last line 'Are you my treasure?...
the answer is yes!' is just so precious.

Thank you for commenting on my blog the other day - sorry it's taken me so long to reciprocate. What a pleasure to be here. xx

  5. My favourite would be the classic Possum Magic, but Zeb luurrrvvves Where is the Green Sheep? He recites it to me and runs away for the far sheep and sticks his head in my face for the near sheep - I love it - it has helped him learn a lot of verbs and adjectives (god, I'm a nerd ;))

  6. how do you pick just one favourite Mem Fox book. As a child I just loved Possum Magic. I can remember eating pavlova or vegemite sandwiches and wondering whether there was a chance I could turn invisible. Miss 6 however loves Shoes from Grandpa, she is partial to anything to do with Grandpa's though since hers passed. This book however had such an impact on her that last year for her birthday all she wanted was shoes like what Jessie in the book got from Grandpa.
